As a business (or more specifically, marketing) student, I have never taken a class such as this one. All my previous classes have been, in general, within the business landscape (courses such as accounting, HR, finance, economics etc). When I learned I was allowed to take a class outside of this realm, I quickly jumped on the opportunity. After a bit of digging, I found this class and was immediately intrigued. The world of media has always fascinated me and thus learning about its past history seemed extremely interesting to me. It feels like now more than ever, with the likes of Trump and big influential figures, media has become more than a tool, some would even say a weapon. With the prevalence of "fake news" and media outlets being billed as good or bad by high ranking officials, it is interesting how much power influences the information we consume. I'm looking forward to learning more on these issues, and to hopefully come away with an understanding as to exactly why and how power and media are so intertwined. I am also quite curious to see how these dynamics differ from country to country, or even perhaps region to region. By the looks of it, within our class we seem to have people from very diverse backgrounds, which I think will bring forth very interesting discussions for which I am excited for. Being from Canada myself, by default we constantly hear of news from the US, which always seem to have big grandiose flashy networks, that seem to treat news more like reality TV or entertainment. I've often wondered how this affects our perception of media, as it seems to shroud the real events in a cloud of superficial material. It will be interesting to explore these topics in depth and analyze how they have changed throughout the course of history.
All in all, I am looking forward to the content of this course, on one hand because I don't really know what to expect, and on the other because this is a topic that has always peaked my interest. Here's to a good semester!
Yes, I agree with you; nowadays, the media is an essential aspect of power, and the media is widely used as a political tool. And every country has various dynamics of media. Very exciting to learn right!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting how news from the US is able to make it into the Canadian news, even if it is nothing too relevant/interesting. During big events, like elections, it's clear that the reach is quite big. But smaller news tend to only reach neighboring countries. As for Switzerland, we are surrounded by four big and somewhat powerful European countries and every day we get news from our neighbors. Being a fairly small country, we also depend on international news.
